Gilt stamped spine labels. Volume 1 with half-title, 5 tissue guarded engravings, 2 maps, one of which is folding. Volume 2 with plate inserted at p. 246, not p.244, 4 engravings in total, including the folding frontis view of Venice as it appeared in 1765. With numerous other in-text illustrations. Plates in both volumes with edges stained, with light staining visible to fore-edge of volume 1 but not affecting the text. Light wear to spine head of vol. 2, with a bite out of volume 1 at foot.

Two Doges of Venice. Being a Slight Sketch of the Lives and Times of Tomaso Mocenigo and Francesco Foscari Wiel, Alethea London: The Chiswick Press, 1891. Hardcover. 8vo, 142p. Rebound in full leather with gilt to the spine, gilt image to rear board, with the binder's initials stamped in gilt to rear board. Front board with an image stamped in blind on a panel of red leather. Some darkening to board edges, and faded at the spine, with a couple of scuffs to the leather. New endpapers, previous owner's rubber stamped name to first blank. Numbers in ink to rear endpapers, with the binder's ink signature to rear pate down at bottom corner with a slice of the paste-down replaced. Bound by Greg Pfaff, 1990. Text clean throughout and overall the book is in very good condition. Amateur rebind. This edition by The Chiswick Press is limited to 500 numbered copies, this being 458.

Gilt lettered and decorated spine compartments with raised bands. Bands are rubbed, with rubbing to head and heel of spine and joints. Some scuffing to board edges and corners. The binding is tight and square, with red cloth reinforced hinges. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Tissue guarded frontis illustration. Christmas gift inscription within a blank red decorated half-title. With numerous full page plates and in-text illustrations in b/w, and a two page birds-eye view of Venice. Translated from the French by F.J. Sitwell.
